Mill Troubleshooting Guide & Warranty

The Alexander Home Greek Mills are built to last a lifetime! If your mill has seized or stopped grinding, try these quick steps for troubleshooting:

Salt Mills

  1. Check your salt grain size. We recommend coarse salt, as the mill's mechanism has trouble grinding larger salt rocks.
  2. Check for hardened residue. Look at the grinding mechanism for hardened salt residue — this can happen when moisture allows salt to dissolve and then harden again, causing the mechanism to seize.
  3. Clean and reset the mill. Completely empty the mill of salt. Gently knock the shaft of the mill downward on a soft towel to dislodge any larger grains. You can also use a dry, soft-bristle brush to remove accumulated salt. Then try the handle to see if the mill turns freely. Once it's rotating smoothly, refill with salt.

Pepper Mills

  1. Check your peppercorn size and quality. We recommend using whole, dry peppercorns as the mill's mechanism can seize with damp, oily, or irregularly sized peppercorns.
  2. Check for residue buildup. Look at the grinding mechanism for residue, such as oily peppercorn buildup, which can cause the mechanism to seize over time.
  3. Clean and reset the mill. Completely empty the mill of peppercorns. Gently knock the shaft of the mill downward on a soft towel to dislodge any larger pieces that may have caused it to seize. You can also use a dry, soft-bristle brush to remove accumulated debris. Then try the handle to see if the mill turns freely. Once it's rotating smoothly, refill it with peppercorns.

Tip: Check the care sheet included in your original packaging for full cleaning instructions. Keeping your mill dry is the best way to prevent issues!
